To section or not to section? Just over a decade ago, that was the question that perplexed much of the repair industry. The extensive use of high strength steels and other materials dramatically changed where shops could safely section parts, leaving anxious shops looking for answers.

GM and other OEMs came to the rescue with repair procedures detailing where and how shops should perform sectioning. Today, with even more super-strong steels and alternative materials in use, these instructions are more important than ever.

The following GM instructions for the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500–2WD serve as a reminder of the steps shops must follow. For your repairs, always refer to the steps specific to the vehicle model. Follow those to the letter and you’ll consistently return vehicles to a pre-collision condition that help ensure safety systems and other features perform as expected should the owner run into trouble again.
